WELCOME TO THE TIN CODE
Tin Code is the global environmental, social and governance (ESG) standard and transparent reporting mechanism proactively and voluntarily adopted by the tin industry, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement in tin exploration projects, mining, smelting and recycling operations.
Tin Code reporting encourages and demonstrates meaningful progress towards better sustainability performance of industry actors through a comprehensive series of standards.
TIN CODE STANDARD
The Tin Code is accessible to operators of all sizes and levels of formality, maximising engagement and setting out progressive steps to improve their ESG performance against internationally recognised expectations.
The Tin Code is currently available to full ITA members and members of the ITA Explorers & Developers Group.
Reporting reflects not only the company’s ESG performance but also efforts made to improve supply chains, including those from artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) who make an important contribution to tin supply.
INDEPENDENT VALIDATION
Independent validation strengthens the credibility and transparency of Tin Code reporting across the full ESG framework.
Companies submit evidence of their performance against applicable Tin Code standards.
An Independent Assessor, separate from ITA, reviews this evidence and determines a performance rating for each standard.
INDEPENDENT ASSURANCE
Independent third-party assurance provides additional verification of company performance and supporting evidence against any relevant Tin Code standard, with the evidence then separately reviewed through Tin Code’s independent validation process to determine the final Tin Code Rating.
Tin Code Assurance provides a dedicated assurance option, including for Standard 7.3 – Responsible Sourcing which is open to all tin smelters globally. Assurance is conducted by qualified independent auditors, registered to the Tin Code.
COMPANIES
For companies, Tin Code reporting can be used as an ESG strategy tool to assess their performance against global ESG expectations, identify opportunities for improvement and demonstrate progress.
TIN USERS
Tin Code provides transparent information to help tin users and other stakeholders understand companies’ ESG and responsible sourcing performance and support supply chain due diligence.
Users can review Tin Code Ratings for a clear performance summary and access supporting reports and assurance information where greater detail is required.
