OMSA 2024 Tin Code Report: Strong Improvements & ITA On-Site Visit

The International Tin Association (ITA) is pleased to announce the publication of Operaciones Metalúrgicas S.A. (OMSA)’s 2024 Tin Code Report. Based in Oruro, Bolivia, OMSA is a leading tin producer and an active participant in the Tin Code, demonstrating strong commitment to sustainable, responsible, and transparent tin production.

The report follows ITA’s recent on-site visit, conducted with independent assessor, Paul Mitchell of Green Horizons Ltd. The visit included operational review, guidance on reporting practices, and support OMSA’s continued progressive improvement of the Tin Code standards. A visit to Empresa Metalúrgica Vinto S.A. (EM Vinto) provided broader regional context and explored opportunities for collaboration on sustainability practices.

During the visit, ITA worked closely with OMSA’s management and technical teams, reviewing smelting and processing operations, advising on evidence collection, documentation, and Tin Code standards. This hands-on support ensured the 2024 report accurately reflects OMSA’s performance

The report highlights OMSA’s strong results: improvements across 41 standards, with most standards rated Conforming or Third-Party Verified. Priority Standards achieved 75% conformance, double the previous report’s 37.5%, positioning OMSA as a leading example among tin producers globally.

A particular highlight is Tin Code Principle 8: Seek to positively influence practices of suppliers of materials, goods and services. OMSA demonstrated robust engagement with cooperative suppliers, including site visits, policy reviews, environmental management, and occupational health and safety follow-ups – showing tangible impact in Bolivia and setting a benchmark for sustainable supply chain practices worldwide.

Further improvements were recorded in occupational health and safety, environmental monitoring, and documentation, reflecting OMSA’s ongoing ESG alignment and continuous improvement.

The ITA commends OMSA for its openness, collaboration, and commitment to continuous improvement. The combined process of on-site engagement and structured reporting demonstrates how targeted support and guidance can drive meaningful progress in sustainable tin production.
